The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced a programme of inspections targeting businesses responsible for managing asbestos. Inspectors will be visiting a range of premises to assess whether dutyholders are complying with their legal responsibilities under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

HSE has identified several recurring issues during previous inspections…

Asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 but it didn’t disappear. Asbestos remains in places that you might not expect, and this means that people working in a number of trades are at increased risk of disturbing asbestos. Elstree Film Studios was fined after maintenance staff disturbed asbestos while removing acoustic wall panelling. Employees had been told there was no asbestos present, but they stopped work when they uncovered insulation they suspected contained asbestos. Testing later confirmed the presence of three types of asbestos. HSE's investigation found that previous asbestos surveys had failed to assess the affected wall surfaces, leaving the work outside the scope of any asbestos assessment. The company pleaded guilty to breaches of Regulations 5, 10 and 15 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and was fined £6,000.
